Learning Intentions

At Revesby Public School we believe that sharing learning and assessment intentions is a very powerful way for teachers to improve student learning. Learning intentions provide a focus for, and clarity of, the knowledge, understanding and skills students are expected to develop as a result of teaching and learning.  It allows students to access their learning in a way that assists them to understand why the learning is important and how to access the learning.

Students are informed about what they need to do to demonstrate their learning in terms of the success criteria. This information is shared in a variety of ways through informal and formal means by the teacher, as appropriate to the learning.

As a part of the learning students should know:

  • what they are going to learn
  • how they are to be assessed
  • the criteria used to assess their learning
  • the meaning of the language used, including subject-specific vocabulary/technical language.

Teachers will consider how the learning and assessment intentions can focus students' attention on learning, including what they are expected to learn, as well as what they will do and how they will do it.  Teachers will give students quality feedback and assist them to reflect on their progress, in relation to the learning and assessment intentions.

Providing students with learning intentions helps guide the students' learning and assists the teacher to gain clarity in the intended learning.
